Craft Venture: writing to engage the senses (the mechanics)
Hello everyone! Brenda from Phydeaux back to go along our conversation about how to improve your chances for acceptance to juried exhibitions and marketplaces. Last time, we talked about photographing your wares. Now we'll talk engaging the senses using words: your descriptions, profiles and announcements. We'll start with the mechanics of writing: spelling, grammar and punctuation. Side by side week, we'll talk most the essentials to include in your product descriptions and other content.
Chances are, you call back you're a pretty groovy writer. You earned practiced grades in English dorsum in the 24-hour interval. You remember "i before due east except afterward c." Y'all're pretty sure you know the difference between a colon and a semicolon … and when to use each. You hardly e'er misspell words.
How important are the mechanics of writing – spelling, grammer and punctuation – to your online business concern? I'g going to suggest that the mechanics are extremely important. You never know who's looking at your online business, but y'all definitely know that jurors are looking later on you lot apply to an online exhibition. Jurors who want the the best of the best and your online presence, including writing, is function of who y'all are equally a seller.
I usually avoid absolutes, simply this ane is so easy and and so critical, it really is absolute! The showtime matter every single online seller should exercise is this: utilize a spellchecker. Use Microsoft Word to write your content and and so use the spellchecker. If you lot don't have Discussion, use Google Documents or Open Office, both of which are gratis, and utilise the spellchecker. At a bare minimum, use Firefox for your spider web browser, which has a congenital in spellchecker! If you lot don't think you need a spellchecker, apply a spellchecker. As someone who'southward written and edited professionally for years, your brain tricks y'all into no longer seeing your mistakes. You lot need tools, 2d pairs of eyes and tricks to break that bike.
Ask a friend or relative – one with truly strong writing and editing skills – to critically look at your content. And then be open to the feedback! If that person tells you lot something that you lot don't agree with – look upwardly the grammatical or writing or punctuation rule before you lot ignore their advice. Yous may very well learn that yous were incorrect, and you will both preserve your friendship and learn something new.
I see so many online shops with announcements – the very beginning thing y'all see in most venues – filled with typos and misspellings. You lot want the very get-go thing that all visitors run across to instill sufficient conviction or intrigue that visitors further investigate your shop. You want those visitors to become repeat visitors, buyers, and repeat buyers. Yous want jurors to continue looking at your shop, rather than close downwards that window to let you know that you're not accepted into their exhibition. Misspelled words and typos are correctable – just endeavor to do then earlier you post that content.
Grammer is a little trickier than spelling. Unless you actually remember and empathize the correct apply of nowadays and by participles (what?), yous're not probable to remember the seeming vagaries of modern English grammar. The skillful news is that Microsoft Word and other word processing programs include grammar checks. Have the grammar check suggestions with a grain of salt. Non certain if your result is on target or not? Use Google! If you lot are using Microsoft Word, you can larn more about the grammar finding using "nearly this judgement." Try it – you may be amazed.
Punctuation is the blight of beingness for many, simply is also easy to right before posting. Not sure if you're using punctuation correctly? Use an online resource (free!) to analyze your writing (try this ane!).
Writing is truly important to your online business, extending to your blog, email and other communications, even shipping labels. You lot don't want to miss out on a great opportunity with a magazine, whose editorial banana may take been turned off by typos and grammatical errors. Y'all don't desire to be turned down by a website for wont of spelling and punctuation. I say this knowing that many folks struggle with dyslexia, making these sorts of tools and resources all the more critical. In our global marketplace, many sellers don't speak or write English as their beginning linguistic communication, which is often met with agreement.
Practise what yous tin to ameliorate your writing by focusing on the fundamentals – the mechanics – which will make the fine art of writing and so much easier!
Share your ain experience! Practise you find spelling, grammar and punctuation like shooting fish in a barrel? If so, share some of your tips! Is this something you lot actually struggle with?
